An LED, or Light Emitting Diode, is made from a compound mixture of elements such as gallium (Ga), arsenic (As), and phosphorus (P). Gallium phosphide diodes emit red light, gallium phosphide diodes emit green light, and silicon carbide diodes emit yellow light. The reverse breakdown voltage of LEDs is 5V. The forward current-voltage characteristic curve is very steep, so a current-limiting resistor must be connected in series to control the current flowing through the LED when in use.
