M5Stack: Modular Embedded Power
M5Stack, a daughter company of Espressif (ESP32), has become a cornerstone in the world of ESP32-based development platforms. Acquired by Espressif due to its innovative, high-quality designs, M5Stack has built a strong community and a powerful modular system.
Their design philosophy revolves around the 5cm × 5cm stackable modules, known as Core modules. By stacking functional layers together, you can rapidly create tailored prototypes and applications for any project.

Meshtastic: Expanding Communication Without Boundaries
A rising trend in Austria and Germany, Meshtastic has captivated outdoor enthusiasts and community networks alike. It’s designed for long-range, low-power communication, making it perfect for remote regions like mountain areas where cellular connectivity is limited.
At Maker Faire Salzburg, we showcased several Meshtastic-compatible devices, including custom-built solutions powered by RAK Wireless modules, featuring solar-charging and DC-DC power management for ultra-low energy consumption — capable of running for weeks in the wild.

SeeedStudio and HELTEC: Compact Communication Solutions
SeeedStudio offers modular ESP32S3 development boards designed for flexibility. Pairing an ESP32S3 baseboard with an SX1262 LoRa module, developers can easily create Meshtastic-compatible nodes. Their modular system allows for quick swaps — for instance, attaching a camera to the same baseboard with ease.
HELTEC provides a more cost-efficient alternative, with popular modules like the Lora32 V3 (and the new V4). They’re excellent for budget-friendly Meshtastic setups while maintaining core functionality.
Both SeeedStudio and HELTEC are supported by Meshtastic’s web flasher tool, making firmware installation and device setup extremely user-friendly — perfect for beginners and professionals alike.
