The Grove - Lightning Sensor (AS3935) is an easy-to-use module capable of detecting both cloud-to-ground and intra-cloud lightning strikes up to 30–40 kilometers away. Built around the AS3935 IC, it evaluates the surrounding electric fields and identifies the characteristic waveform of lightning. Supporting both I²C and SPI interfaces, as well as 3.3V and 5V power supply, this sensor is perfect for weather stations, portable GPS devices, and automated protection systems.
Key Features
-
Lightning Detection: Identifies cloud-to-ground and intra-cloud lightning based on electric fields.
-
Wide Detection Range: Senses lightning up to 30–40 km away.
-
Programmable Parameters: Thresholds can be fine-tuned for optimal performance.
-
Flexible Communication: Supports I²C and SPI for versatile integration.
-
Low Power Consumption: Operates at as little as 2 µA in power-down mode.
How It Works
The sensor uses a resonant LC circuit tuned to 500 kHz to detect electromagnetic pulses generated during lightning strikes. By filtering and analyzing these signals, it accurately identifies lightning events while minimizing false positives caused by human-made electromagnetic interference.
Applications
-
Lightning and Storm Alert Systems
-
DIY Weather Stations
-
GPS Power-Down Protection
-
Automated Equipment Safety Systems
-
Environmental Monitoring Projects
