Type A is an exponential or logarithmic (inverse-logarithmic) potentiometer. When it starts to rotate, the resistance value changes greatly. And as the rotation angle approaches the maximum resistance value, the resistance change becomes smaller. The resistance value of the exponential (inverse-logarithmic) potentiometer changes exponentially with the rotation angle. It is widely used in volume control circuits such as those in radios, tape recorders, and televisions. Because human hearing is sensitive to sound changes according to exponential relationships, adjusting the volume according to the resistance value change makes the sound heard by people feel stable and comfortable. Therefore, this type of potentiometer is suitable for the tone control circuit of audio circuits.


Type B is a linear potentiometer: the distribution of conductive substances on its resistor body is uniform, and the resistance values per unit length are roughly equal. The change in resistance value is in a linear relationship with the rotation angle of the potentiometer, which is mainly used for voltage division. The resistance value changes evenly with the rotation angle, suitable for adjustment functions such as voltage division and tone regulation. Generally, this is the type of potentiometer used more frequently in wiring applications.
